The discovery of southern red pearl ornaments in ancient Yunnan tombs confirms that they were already a symbol of aristocratic status as early as the Warring States period. According to the Western Capital Miscellaneous Records of the Han Dynasty, Southern Red Agate and Jade are among the royal "red jade" tributes, which can only be worn by three princes and nine ministers. The Tang Dynasty referred to Southern Red Agate, beeswax, and turquoise as the "Three Treasures of the Snowy Land" and exported them to Persia through the ancient Tea Horse Road.
